Check the roof vent fan behind the fridge, if your model has one. A fan that has failed lets heat build up in the cabinet behind the unit, which cripples cooling capacity on a hot day even with a perfectly healthy fridge.
Feel the cooling fins on the back of the unit (through the exterior access panel) for a heavy buildup of dust or debris. Restricted airflow there mimics a failed unit.
